Very Lucky Turtle Soup (大幸运山瑞汤)
After 60 years, Very Lucky Turtle Soup (大幸运山瑞汤) is closing its doors. Known for its traditional turtle soup, crocodile stew, and herbal claypot dishes, the beloved stall at Berseh Food Centre has been a culinary mainstay since 1981. Second-generation owner Bobby Chu (崔钰麟), 65, took over the business from his parents, who started it as a roadside stall in 1960.
Bobby is retiring due to health issues after a recent fall and medical advice to avoid long hours on his feet. His two sons, working in unrelated industries, will not be taking over the stall as they lack the expertise to continue the trade.
Last Day of Operation: End August 2025
Address: 166 Jalan Besar, Berseh Food Centre, #02-38/49, Singapore 208877
Reason for Closure: Owner’s declining health; no successor within the family
Dong Fang Hong Sotong Ball Seafood Soup
The iconic Dong Fang Hong Sotong Ball Seafood Soup (东方红墨鱼丸什锦汤) stall at Fong Lin Market and Food Centre will close at the end of July 2025, marking the end of a 67-year-old hawker legacy. Founded before 1958 by Mr. Yang, the stall became known for its labor-intensive, handmade sotong balls using fresh seafood. It was later handed down to his daughters—three sisters—who ran it together for decades.
The current owner, 66-year-old Yang Meili, has been operating the stall single-handedly in recent years after her elder sister (80) and younger sister (63) fell ill. Despite sustaining a leg burn in May, she continued the physically demanding work, preparing ingredients from 3 a.m. daily.
With no successors and mounting health issues, Yang has decided to retire. The stall, long cherished by regulars for its handmade touch and old-school flavors, will cease operations quietly, leaving behind a beloved piece of Singapore’s hawker heritage.
