F&B Businesses Closure List 2024: Endings and Beginnings
The F&B scene in Singapore is fiercely competitive and constantly evolving. New restaurants, cafes, and eateries regularly emerge, but closures are also common. The reasons for closures vary, including retirement, redevelopment, new business strategies, or poor performance. Despite these challenges, many establishments intend to return with fresh concepts and culinary offerings after a hiatus. We eagerly anticipate their comeback, as they have previously provided commendable food and services.
In light of these dynamics, business registry statistics from the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) reveal the number of F&B entities opened and closed in the first half of 2024 as follows:
Month | F&B Entities Opened | F&B Entities Closed | Difference (%) |
February | 237 | 250 | -5.22% |
May | 338 | 389 | -13.12% |
June | 306 | 269 | 13.77% |
The F&B business in Singapore faced challenges with more closures than openings overall but showed signs of recovery in June 2024. Hopefully, there will be more good news in the second half of 2024.
If you notice any of your favorite dining spots have disappeared from the local culinary landscape, please inform us so we can keep our list updated.
Bakeries
Tigerlily Patisserie
Tigerlily Patisserie, renowned for its French-inspired pastries, ceased operations on April 30, 2024. The patisserie, located at Joo Chiat Road, was conceptualized during the Covid-19 pandemic in July 2020, starting with bake boxes to uplift spirits. Founder and award-winning pastry chef Maxine Ngooi, with experience from Les Amis and Joel Robuchon Restaurant, aimed to invigorate Singapore’s bakery scene with integrity and a commitment to craft. The patisserie’s signature offerings included the Pistachio Marimo and Pink Guava & Pear cake.
The decision to close stemmed from rising operational costs and the end of the lease. Tigerlily was recognized with 3 spoons at the Museum of Ice Cream’s Sweet Spot Awards, voted Pastry Chef of the Year at the World Gourmet Awards, and featured in Prestige’s 40 under 40. The closure marked a poignant end to a journey filled with community support and culinary innovation.

Ponggol Seafood

Founded in 1969 by Mr. Ting Choon Teng, the restaurant originally bore the name Hock Kee Seafood Restaurant and was located near Punggol Jetty at the end of Punggol Road. Its rustic charm and delectable seafood dishes drew both locals and tourists during the 1970s and 1980s. However, in 1994, the government acquired the land, forcing the restaurant to relocate.
After operating at various locations over the next two decades, Ponggol Seafood returned to its original spot at The Punggol Settlement in 2014. In 2023, the family-run business changed hands, with new owners changing the name to New Punggol Seafood but later rebranded it as Ponggol. Mr. Fabian Lim, along with his father Joseph Lim and nephew Edward Ho, took over the restaurant. Despite their efforts to revive its former glory, challenges arose.
